Can I get DSL w/o having to pay for local landline phone service?

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

To take advantage of VOIP, I need DSL, but to get DSL, it seems I need to pay for local phone service. This creates no economic incentive for me to get the VOIP. Can I work this in a way which will actually lower my monthly bills by cutting out the local landline phone charges?

Is it possible to have better quality VOIP services from a GEOSTATIONARY satellite?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Is it possible to have better quality VOIP services from a GEOSTATIONARY satellite?

If that is not a possibility, what what should be done to get VOIP traffic on a Satellite internet connection?

Are there any VOIP accelerators? or other expansion cards that will hardware process the VOIP packets in realtime?
Have you heard of TACHYON? They provide VOIP over their satellite platform. How do they do that? They say that they have QOS enabled and some custom software??!! Most people say that it is not possible to have a good VOIP experience on SAT Internet. Yet they gurantee VOIP over SAT Internet!!

My ISP is blocking my magicjack (VoiP) ?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I am stationed in South Korea, My ISP is LG DACOM and they have blocked the ports for my MagicJack and to alot of the VoiP services based in the states. So they can try and monapolize on VoiP here. THey are wanting to charge 40-45 bucks a month which is ridiculous. THey are only doing this on the bases here in South Korea. If you live off base you can still use magic jack vonage etc…Please Help i need to figure out a way to get around this. maybe using differant ports, tunneling or something i dunno. But i need help.

Is there a good free VOIP that provides Caller ID?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I use Skype and really like it for free PC to Phone calls, but many people won’t answer the phone if they don’t know who’s calling, and Skype calls show up as either unknown or 01234…or something like that.

Does anybody know of another free telephony service that’s good, but offers a Caller ID option?
Yes, I forgot to add that Skype will start charging for PC to Phone calls to the U.S. and Canada, as of today, but if you pay for a year before Jan 18th–I think–it’s only $15, instead of $30. Well worth it, but I thought that even with the Skype-In no. you still don’t have a Caller ID option. I’ll check on it again. Thanks for the info.

Any phone service nerds out there?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

OK, so I live in Denver and I’m starting a business. I was hoping just to use my cell phone but for reasons I won’t bore you with, I need a dedicated business number that is listed with directory assistance. So my question is: what’s the cheapest way to get that? I don’t need a whole working phone account. I don’t even need to be able to call out. At most I would need an outgoing message that directs callers to dial my cell phone number.

So does anyone know of any inexpensive solutions? Thanks for your help.

P.S. - VOIP won’t work b/c those numbers are unlisted and I need mine to be listed, so please don’t suggest that.

Simonne
